Bath Swim Therapyhalliwick.org.uk/Bath Swim Therapy run swimming sessions for youngsters with disabilities and additional needs in fully-accessible, warm water pools. Children are supported by parents or carers within a small group, offering those who face difficulties in accessing swimming a friendly, supportive environment in which to develop their water confidence and swimming skills.
Our instructor Ingrid is a trained social worker from Germany, who has worked with adults with learning disabilities here in the UK since 1998. She is a qualified Halliwick Instructor. The Halliwick concept is an approach that uses a Ten Point Programme to teach all people, in particular focusing on disabled people, to participate in water activities, to move independently in water and to swim without using flotation aids. Ingrid is also a qualified Watsu (Water Shiatsu) practitioner with training in Water Shiatsu. . Watsu is a deeply relaxing aquatic movement therapy that is based on Zen Shiatsu. Shiatsu is a hands-on therapy that uses the same principles as acupuncture, but without needles. Bath Swim Therapy was originally established by Pamela Galloway and a group of local parents as a community initiative. It is organised by volunteers, parents and carers and relies on fund-raising in order to provide sessions. Sadly, Pamela passed away in April 2017 and we found her skills and experience hard to replace. We are delighted that Ingrid Gorr has been able to take on some of the sessions and are working hard to resume sessions where we can. |
